About Nicosia - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus.
Situated on the River Pedieos, admnistrativ Nicosia is the center of a sector, and is currently the only divided capital in the world, the northern (Turkish) and southern (Greek) being separated by a "Green Line", a demilitarized zone maintained by the UN. The city is a trade center and manufactures textiles, leather, ceramics, plastics and other products. Copper mines are nearby.
Known as Ledra or Ledrae in antiquity, the city became the seat of the kings of Cyprus in 1192. In 1489 came under the authority of Venice and was occupied by the Turks in 1571. Nicosia was the scene of extreme violence before independence, followed by the 1974 Turkish invasion, part of the northern sector to be isolated by a boundary and evolve into a United Nations buffer zone.
In the heart of the city, within the 16th century Venetian walls there are plenty of museums, art galleries, Byzantine churches, and medieval buildings. The vintage narrow streets which have been maintained give a feeling of the romantic atmosphere of the past. Outside of the walls in the new city there are modern buildings and amenities.
