Girne

Kyrenia (Greek Κερύνεια, Keryneia; Turkish Girne) is a city in the northern part of the island of Cyprus. The city is known for its strategic position of its port and because it was one of the first places occupied by the Turkish army, on the occasion of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974.

Recommendations for travel Girne

What makes it special is the fact that it is guarded by the Pentadaktylos Mountains, and has many 1300 years old architectural elements and endless opportunities for outdoor recreation. The picturesque old port of Kyrenia is one of the best places to visit in Northern Cyprus. It is bordered by colorful apartments, cafes, bars and restaurants that offer plenty of good places to eat, where you can taste local food. It is a wonderful place for walks, offering a timeless atmosphere and wonderful views over the sea. Near Kyrenia Port you will meet Kyrenia Castle, a complicated mix of construction styles worth visiting once you arrive in Northern Cyprus. Behind the walls of the Venetian castle you will find the Church of St. George, royal apartments, Byzantine chapels or French dungeons. The ship exhibited in the Shipwreck Museum here is estimated to have sunk around 300 BC and is, to date, the oldest ship that was recovered from the seabed. In fact, another place to visit in Kyrenia includes the Museum of Decorative Arts.

The mountain scenery of the resort is worth exploring and offers a selection of picturesque hiking trails. Half-day trips and hikes are available throughout the day. This area contains the most famous historical and cultural attractions in Northern Cyprus, including the nearby Bellapais Village, with the famous monastery and film festival. All these are complemented by a good offer of quality local shops, restaurants, hotels and casinos. The modern recreational facilities and the 18-hole Korineum Golf Course, as well as a sandy beach, Turtles Beach, are a 20-minute drive away. Something a little different and truly memorable is the admiration of the turtles on certain beaches around the city of Kyrenia and the Karpas Peninsula. The small frogs are definitely an unusual attraction, and during the months of July and August, numerous specimens can be seen on the shores of Turtles Beach.
